It is no secret that cars in cities are one of the major sources of air pollution and contributors to climate change. We have one specific solution to the problems they pose: improving the public transport system. We will increase the number of routes, renew the bus fleet and encourage residents to more often swap their private cars for buses and trolleybuses.

A comfortable and well-developed public transport system improves air quality, reduces the risk of respiratory diseases and other health problems, and reduces traffic congestion. It also saves money for residents and visitors and makes it easier to travel around the capital.

Here’s how public transport will improve alongside a greener Vilnius:

  • by 2028, buses and trolleybuses on 44 routes will run more frequently, making journeys more comfortable and faster for all residents;
  • 7 new routes will be added by 2028, improving accessibility to different parts of the city and reducing the intensity of car traffic;
  • as many as 297 new electric buses will replace old buses, reducing the use of fossil fuels in the capital and providing cleaner air for the residents of the city;
  • more attention will be paid to making the public transport system accessible to people with disabilities, with newly purchased vehicles that are comfortable and accessible for all passengers.

We have even more ambitious plans for the future:

  • 12 new routes will be added by 2030, improving accessibility to different parts of the city and reducing car traffic congestion;
  • by 2030, 60% of public transport vehicles will be powered by electricity and the remaining 40% by alternative fuels. The use of electric buses and trolleybuses will make a significant contribution to reducing air pollution, while the use of alternative fuels will reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • by 2030, public transport will move even faster, with 23.4 km of additional A lanes to reduce traffic congestion and travel times.

Faster and more convenient public transport encourages people to choose sustainable means of transport over private cars, thus, reducing CO2 emissions and traffic congestion.

Only by creating the right conditions we can expect residents to choose sustainable alternatives, which is why the development of public transport is and will continue to be a priority for greener Vilnius.

What can you do?

Want to promote sustainable mobility? We invite to choose public transport, plan a bike ride and try out the footpaths! Don’t forget that you can combine these modes of travel to make travelling even easier.
