The vision of the green capital includes streets that make you want not only to travel, but also to linger a little longer, sit on a bench, breathe in fresh air or listen to chirping birds. To make this vision a reality, a number of sustainable solutions – cycle streets, looping traffic, green waves of Vilnius – have been used. We invite you to take a look at all the initiatives that are creating low-emission areas in our city.

Looping traffic means a safer and less polluted city

In 2020, a loop traffic system was implemented in the Old Town of the capital, which connects the historic centre of the city with four loops, thus, reducing transit traffic.

The positive results of this solution are already visible: the transit traffic in the streets of the Old Town has been halved, the air quality has improved, the Old Town has become a more attractive place to walk, and outdoor cafés are thriving.

Cycle streets are the key to safety and sustainability

Vilnius is also actively expanding its cycle street network, which provides equally comfortable traffic conditions for cyclists and drivers of other vehicles. P. Vileišio Street was the first street to be built on this principle. It is planned that the length of cycle streets in the capital will reach up to 50 km. The number of similar streets in Vilnius is growing. Cyclists have priority. M.K. Čiurlionio, Z. Sierakausko, Jovaros, P. Klimo and Raseinių streets have special bicycle street signs that allow cyclists to ride across the entire width of the street. These signs prohibit car drivers from overtaking cyclists when pulling out into the oncoming lane, and also prohibit cyclists from travelling at speeds above 30 km/h.

Quiet traffic streets – more space for pedestrians and cyclists

Quiet traffic streets is another initiative in Vilnius aimed at creating a safer and cleaner environment. These streets limit car speeds to 30 km/h, have narrower lanes and more space for pedestrians and cyclists. It is estimated that quiet traffic streets near houses are at least 50% safer and about 10 dB quieter. By 2030, it is planned that most streets used for access to homes or institutions will be redesigned according to quiet traffic principles. This will help reduce accidents, improve air quality and create a more pleasant living environment.

Green areas

More than 100,000 trees, 10 million shrubs and 300,000 winders – this is the ambitious goal of Vilnius to create a green wave. This initiative is aimed at creating a more welcoming, sustainable and healthier city for the residents, visitors of the city and the biodiversity around us. Green city streets are not only a relief for the eyes, they also help to improve air quality, absorb rainwater, reduce the heat island effect, retain moisture and reduce greenhouse gases (GHG).

Vilnius not only talks about sustainability, but also works to ensure that citizens enjoy cleaner air, safer streets and more convenient infrastructure. Everyone can contribute to this, whether it’s through cycling, walking or public transport. Together, we are building a sustainable and green capital. See you on the road!

What can you do?

Contribute to creation of low emission areas by cycling, walking or using public transport. Observe speed limits on quiet streets and take part in tree planting initiatives. Every sustainable action you take can contribute to a cleaner and greener Vilnius.
