Waste prevention
Corresct and responsible sorting of waste is one of the first steps every city inhabitant must take to contribute to a green capital.
Vilnius has various initiatives to educate the society about waste prevention and sorting. These range from educational programmes for schools to broader public awareness projects.
“Waste culture” exam
The exam “Culture of Waste”exam which takes place every year gives inhabitants the opportunity to test their knowledge about waste sorting and management. Participants can find out where to dispose of disposable cups, the advantages of semi-underground containers etc. Knowledge of waste management helps each of us to make responsible choices and contribute to a sustainable environment.
“Waste Basketball”
Vilnius Waste System Administrator (VASA) also contributes to education about waste sorting by organising interactive lessons for primary school children “Waste Basketball”. These lessons are designed to raise children’s awareness and responsibility through an active and playful format. During the lessons, children learn to sort waste and develop a positive attitude towards responsible waste management.
“Vilnius is a school”
The project is aimed at modernising the education system and moving at least 10% of lessons from the traditional school environment into urban spaces. “Vilnius is a school” gives schoolchiren the opportunity to take part in a range of educational activities related to the environment. The available lessons include waste sorting training, learning about biodiversity in Vilnius parks, environmental hikes and many more. These interactive lessons not only enrich the educational process and provide a better understanding of the city, but also give the opportunity to learn about the most important principles of waste separation.
“My school sorts”
The initiative “My school sorts” helps to develop a responsible attitude towards waste management among children and young people attending schools and pre-schools in Vilnius City. This creates a more sustainable and cleaner environment for future generations.
