The exhibition “Living City” was opened at the Wooden Architecture Centre of Vilnius City Museum, looking at Vilnius as a green, living, constantly growing and changing organism.

The exhibition “Living City” was inspired by Vilnius being awarded the title of European Green Capital this year. This title is awarded to cities that are active in environmental protection and become an inspiration to others. Cities that have received the European Green Capital award are not only committed to reducing pollution, but also to changing habits, creating long-term environmentally friendly solutions and inviting residents to be a part of this change.

“Each of us is a cell of a living city – how we move and what we choose determines the direction in which the city grows. A green city is not just about more trees or cycle paths. It is an attitude, culture, respect for the environment and for each other. Today, we are creating Vilnius in which we will want to live tomorrow,” says Jurga Pociūtė-Mikūtienė, the head of the project “Vilnius – European Green Capital 2025”.

Since 2010, sixteen European cities have earned this title, and in 2026, the Portuguese city of Guimarães will take over the title of the European Green Capital from Vilnius.

Visions of a green future city

During the exhibition “Living City”, visitors will be able to learn about various initiatives in Vilnius and other European green capitals and see up close what makes Vilnius a sustainable, lively and bustling city.
Indrė Užuotaitė, the head of the Wooden Architecture Centre, is delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit this exhibition in this wooden section of Vilnius City Museum: “The topic of a green and vibrant city is important to the Wooden Architecture Centre, and we discuss contemporary green solutions in our permanent exhibition,” says I. Užuotaitė. “This exhibition is a great opportunity to remember that sustainable solutions are not limited to the reuse of historical buildings and their elements, which is the main focus of our centre, but also to affect and improve the city life in a variety of ways.”

The exhibition “Living City” will be accompanied by a specially designed educational programme, where visitors will not only be able to supplement an interactive map and dream about the city of the future, but also to learn more about local biodiversity and taste city honey produced in various European green capitals.

The exhibition “Living City” will be open from 20 August 2025 to 11 January 2026.

The exhibition is organised by the Wooden Architecture Centre of Vilnius City Museum. Sponsor and partner: Vilnius City Municipality project “Vilnius – European Green Capital 2025”.
