New boundary markers with an important message greet visitors to Vilnius
The city is updating its boundary markers as it celebrates the prestigious title Vilnius — European Green Capital 2025 awarded by the European Commission. Every time visitors enter the capital and locals return home, they will see the symbol of the green achievement next to the city’s name.
The new boundary markers will greet visitors coming from Panevėžys, Varėna, Kaunas, and Minsk throughout the coming year.
Mayor Valdas Benkunskas says that the green capital is decided by a panel of independent experts, who assess a wide range of areas: water and air quality, progressiveness of the circular economy, noise emissions in the city, waste management, biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change.
‘The European Green Capital award is not only important recognition for Vilnius, but also a commitment to continue to create an even greener city and educate the public about sustainability. With the goal of making Vilnius a completely climate-neutral city by 2030, we are focusing more and more each year on nurturing biodiversity, climate change mitigation, more sustainable mobility, and more efficient management of city life,’ says Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
