Wastewater maintenance
Did you know that every day, residents and businesses in Vilnius generate enough wastewater to fill even 40 Olympic swimming pools?
In the capital, as much as 100,000 m3 of wastewater is discharged into water bodies every day. Treatment of wastewater is not only a big challenge, but also a vital mission. Untreated wastewater can cause severe environmental pollution and damage biodiversity if it enters water bodies. For this reason, the Green Capital makes every effort to ensure that the wastewater generated in the city is scrupulously treated.
Not only treats wastewater, but also generates energy
The new filters installed in Vilnius wastewater treatment system are able to trap the smallest particles of plastic and other materials – up to 12 microns in size. As a comparison, a human hair is approximately 70 microns wide, and the current filters in our wastewater system can remove almost 6 times finer waste.
In order to maximise the extent of circularity, the waste iron generated during waste water treatment is separated. This then becomes a valuable raw material in various industries, not only giving the materials a second chance at life but also reducing waste.
In addition, the sludge resulting from wastewater treatment is converted into biogas, which is considered as a sustainable source of energy. Thus, together with solar energy, almost a third of energy consumption by Vilniaus vandenys is already sustainable. The company’s long-term strategy is to source all energy from renewable sources by 2032.
How can you help make water bodies cleaner?
Although wastewater treatment systems are advanced, some of the waste that enters them is still a problem. For example, parts of household chemicals, medicines or plastics that are difficult to treat can pollute water bodies.
Some tips for residents on how to make their wastewater cleaner:
- never pour household chemicals or throw medicines in the sink or toilet;
- reduce your plastic consumption and manage your waste properly;
- choose environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Everyone’s contribution helps ensure that the wastewater system of Vilnius works efficiently and protects our environment!
