Vilnius is again in the international spotlight: the capital is listed among most sustainable travel destinations in Europe
The capital of Lithuania has received another important international recognition – the prestigious UK travel magazine Wanderlust has included Vilnius in the Travel List Green Europe 2025, the list of the greenest and most sustainable travel destinations in Europe. The city was selected from among hundreds of destinations assessed and is one of only 17 cities and regions that meet the highest sustainability standards.
The capital was recognised for its abundance of green spaces, sustainable infrastructure and consistent efforts to nurture the city’s biodiversity. As much as 70% of the territory of Vilnius is covered by green spaces, and there are more than 140 km of cycle paths and almost 1,500 km of hiking trails across the city.
Among other initiatives singled out was a 100 km trail around Vilnius connecting natural and cultural sites in the city, as well as free drinking water stations installed throughout the capital.
“The Wanderlust List is an important international acknowledgment confirming that consistent efforts to enhance urban greenery and sustainable initiatives yield tangible results. Vilnius is increasingly establishing itself as an attractive and responsible travel choice. It is no coincidence that this recognition comes in the year when we are the European Green Capital 2025 – it inspires further sustainable urban development and sets an example for other cities in Europe,” Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas says.
The designation was published in the list of recommendations compiled by Wanderlust magazine for 2025, which focuses on sustainable tourism and responsible travel. It is one of the best-known travel publications in the United Kingdom, reaching more than 1.2 million readers worldwide every year.
