Safe, tidy and green yards are not a whim, but a necessity that improves the quality of life of the residents of the city, contributes to preserving biodiversity, helps combat climate change and beautifies the nature outside everyone’s windows.

Vilnius City is working hard to provide the residents the opportunity to renovate their homes and beautify their surroundings.

Yard management

The residents of Vilnius are invited to renovate the multi-apartment buildings they live in, whereas the city in turn renovates the yards of the renovated buildings free of charge. This means that with the wave of renovation, our yards are even more cosy, comfortable and safe.

The municipality renovates pavements, parking lots, children’s playgrounds, fitness equipment, benches and landscaping in renovated multi-apartment buildings. An interactive map gives everyone in Vilnius access to information about their house and neighbourhood. If all the multi-apartment buildings in the neighbourhood have been renovated or the renovation process has already started, the yards will also be renovated.

Neighbourhood programme

A neighbourhood is a community of spatially connected apartment buildings that share a common courtyard infrastructure. The programme is aimed not only at renovating multi-apartment buildings, but also to create cosy and safe community areas. Participants decide how to renovate their own yard to make it fun and cosy. The municipality provides between EUR 10 and EUR 15 per square metre of undeveloped neighbourhood area to create comfortable neighbourhood areas. Thus, if your neighbourhood is 5,000 m2 , you can receive from EUR 50 to EUR 75,000 to renovate it.

Residents can also finance the design of simple recreational or sporting buildings such as gazebos, recreation areas, playgrounds, fitness equipment, etc. In order to preserve the green spaces of the neighbourhood, the programme provides that at least 30% of the total area of the neighbourhood must be reserved for green spaces.

We also urge you not to forget the master’s subway – the area around the house, which is taken care of by the residents themselves. This semi-private area can be beautified according to your needs, such as a bench, landscaping, decoration, etc.

Community gardens

Another unique way to live more sustainably and get to know your community better, as well as to contribute to the growth of a greener capital, is through the community gardens initiative. Throughout Vilnius City and the region, residents are encouraged to come together to set up community gardens in the yards of multi-apartment buildings. These gardens can be transformed into whole gardens of produce, giving city dwellers the chance to experience the pleasures of living closer to nature. Urban gardening has already been successfully developed by residents of Antakalnis and Pilaitė micro-districts. Vilnius City has prepared a guide if you decide to implement such an initiative in your community.

Such projects offer opportunities to create the yard of your dreams. By encouraging the modernisation of buildings and the improvement of neighbourhood areas, we are creating not only a more beautiful city, but also a safer, more sustainable, more liveable city for everyone.

What can you do?

Turn your yard into a green oasis, where not only nature but also community spirit can flourish. Create community gardens in your neighbourhood, organise areas for recreation and active life. Take part in yard renovation projects and contribute to the development of urban green areas – every initiative, no matter how small, can have a big impact on your living environment and the urban ecosystem. Let your ideas and actions help shape the future of a city where people and nature live in perfect harmony.
