Fresh water is the real pride of Lithuania! We are pleased that residents and visitors can safely drink tap water and have access to fresh water sources throughout the city.

Did you know that Vilnius water supply system is the oldest in Lithuania? We are also unique in that we are one of the few capital cities in the world that uses only groundwater (from 40-250 metre depth water wells) for drinking. Vilniaus vandenys supplies water to about 255,000 residents and visitors of the city and the district.

Around 23,000 quality tests are carried out in laboratories every year to ensure that we have the purest and healthiest water.

The quality map of Vilniaus vandenys shows that all water points in the region provide safe and drinkable tap water. This is a good opportunity to remember to always have portable container for drinking water with you.

Fossil fuels, fresh water and many other resources are used for manufacture of one litre plastic bottle, so drinking tap water saves water and reduces plastic pollution.

Water stations

We believe that water should be accessible to everyone, which is why we have set up 40 stations in the city where residents and visitors can refresh themselves for free. You’ll find these stations in parks, squares, sports areas, schools, and they are also suitable for our pets.

However, it is important not only to enjoy fresh water, but also to remember to conserve it. Even though our country has abundant water supplies, we discharge large amounts of water into our wastewater every day. We use about 80 litres of water in the bath and 35-75 litres in the shower. A washing machine uses 65 litres and a dishwasher uses 25 litres of water. Each of us can contribute to the conservation of water and the environment by reducing our water consumption and by choosing environmentally friendly household chemical agents.

To find out how Vilnius City manages to ensure efficient and high-quality wastewater treatment, see “Wastewater maintenance”.

What can you do?

Each of us can contrbute to preservation of fresh water every day. Start with small steps – shorten your washing time, always carry a drinking flask with you, use water stations in your city.
