Imagine a city where the streets are filled with greenery, the noise and pollution of the city are drowned out by the rustle of the trees and the refreshing shade, and traffic is friendly to everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers.

Vilnius is striving to become such a modern, green, friendly city for residents and visitors. The capital has set itself an ambitious goal: to create a sustainable mobility system that meets key sustainability principles and makes the city even more liveable.

Safe, quiet and clean streets

The low emission area, looping traffic and the development of green are are all solutions to the ambitious goal of creating a sustainable mobility system. In such a city, citizens can enjoy fresh air, safe streets and a convenient infrastructure that is well suited not only to car drivers but also to those using drivers of non-motorised vehicles. It is encouraging to see the positive results of the design and implementation of such a system – the number of people choosing to move more sustainably is steadily increasing, the looping traffic has halved the amount of transit traffic in the Old Town, the air quality has improved, and the historic centre of the city has become a more attractive place to walk around.

Pedestrian safety and comfort

Did you know that the capital is surrounded by 1,490 km of footpaths? The more people who walk on the streets, the less congestion and air pollution. Currently, 25% of journeys in the capital are made on foot. Our goal is to have at least 29% of journeys in the city by 2030. To achieve this, 62 km of pedestrian paths have been renovated and constructed in 2023, pavements have been replaced in various neighbourhoods and cycle lanes have been built. Pedestrian waiting times at 132 traffic lights in the city are being reduced to speed up walking. To make walking even more attractive, Vilnius offers 16 daily walking routes and 24 leisure walking routes through some of the most beautiful places of the city.

A paradise for cyclists

Vilnius is rapidly expanding its infrastructure of cycle paths to become a paradise for cycling enthusiasts. By 2027, it plans to extend the cycle street network to more than 200 km, create a core network of cycle routes and install multi-purpose cycle storage facilities. This will allow the residents and visitors of Vilnius to travel comfortably and safely by two-wheeled transport throughout the city, reducing air pollution and traffic congestion.

Efficient public transport

Vilnius public transport is becoming more and more convenient and environmentally friendly. By 2028, there are plans to increase the number of public transport journeys by up to 54%, introduce 12 new routes and generally improve connectivity in the city. In the near future, 60% of public transport vehicles will run on electricity and the rest on alternative fuels.

Involvement of residents

Vilnius wants to involve citizens in implementing sustainable mobility solutions. Every citizen can contribute to the growth of a green capital by choosing cycling, walking or public transport. By creating a sustainable and green city together, they can enjoy cleaner air, safer streets and more convenient infrastructure.

The Sustainable Mobility Plan of Vilnius City is an invitation to join the green revolution. Every choice we make – whether by bike, on foot or by public transport – contributes to a sustainable and attractive capital city. See you on the road to a greener Vilnius!
