WATER
The year 2024 was a year of growth and quality for the “Vilniaus vandenys” team.
The Most Modern Wastewater Treatment Plant
After completing the second phase of the reconstruction of the Vilnius wastewater treatment plant, a significant qualitative leap was achieved – the plant now captures and treats plastic and other pollutant particles as small as 12 microns. The efficiency of nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD7), and phosphorus removal has increased 2 to 6 times, which significantly contributes to the protection of the Neris River and the Baltic Sea ecosystems.
Laboratory Accreditation
The “Vilniaus vandenys” laboratory is one of the first in Lithuania to be accredited according to the international LST EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard. This confirms the high quality and reliability of the tests performed.
A Wastewater Treatment Plant with No Environmental Impact
After reconstruction, the Švenčionys wastewater treatment plant became closed – wastewater is now treated invisibly and without unpleasant odors. The efficiency of nitrogen removal has more than doubled, and phosphorus removal has increased by as much as eleven times. This positively affects not only the ecological condition of the local stream but also contributes to the protection of rivers throughout the entire Nemunas basin.
Key Operational Data 2024:
● Water supplied to 6.4 thousand new customers;
● 36 million cubic meters of water delivered to customers;
● 45.5 million cubic meters of wastewater was treated.
Performance Indicators:
● 0 accidents;
● 23.5% of electricity generated for internal use;
● Savings of €345,000 and over 7,600 work hours;
● Greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 220 tons;
● 692 Kaizen improvements implemented;
● 58.2% of employees engaged in performance improvement.
A Smart City
A total of 140,000 smart cold water meters have been installed, accounting for 40% of all operational metering devices in the city of Vilnius.
Tested and implemented innovations
Environmental Protection. Tertiary Treatment – Tertiary filters have been installed at the Vilnius and Švenčionys wastewater treatment plants, capturing particles smaller than a hair.
Water Quality. Pipe Cleaning with Ice – An innovative pipe cleaning method has been tested, which could replace traditional methods.
Engineering Technology. 3D Scanners – Help accurately assess the condition of water supply and wastewater manholes.
Engineering Technology. Odor-Absorbing Filter – An innovation being tested in the wastewater manholes of Vilnius Old Town and Lazdynėliai.
